You’ve heard of Denali, and maybe Glacier Bay. But the rest will be unheralded, underrated, and-as a result-free from crowds.

Denali Country wide Park

Claim to fame: The tallest hill in North America, Mt. McKinley is more commonly known as Denali. Around the park your car, it’s generally known simply as “the mountain”-as in, “Can you see the hill today? ” (Hint: You probably can’t. )

Good to know: Denali is closed to cars. Park shuttles and tour buses rattle up and down the park’s lone route, and visitors with limited time can easily see a surprising amount from scenery and fauna on a one-day drive out and again. But a much better option is to leave the road and reach the backcountry on foot.

Apart from a few little walks near the recreation area entrance, Denali will not bother with designated walking trails; instead, site visitors are encouraged to (respectfully) walk and camp anywhere they please. Carry your bear gun barrel and a good quality ground map before venturing out into the wild.

Great to know: Wrangell-St. Elias is a rarity in the Alaskan NPS-a playground you can drive right into. A rough street leads from Chitina, just outside recreation area boundaries, into the little tourism town from McCarthy and its nearby ghost town, Kennicott.

A licensed operator works guided glacier hikes and ice climbing excursions out of Kennicott, as well as really remarkable tours of the traditional Kennicott copper work, a 13-storey wreck built into the side in the mountains above area.

Obviously, Wrangell-St. Elias has a lot of backcountry, but its unusual degree of infrastructure and invitee support also causes it to become more newbie-friendly when compared to most Alaskan theme parks.

P. S: The tasting menu at McCarthy Lodge is well worth trying.

Klondike Gold Rush State Historical Park

Claims to fame: The Chilkoot Trail. This three-to-four-day hike (or unbelievable one-day trail run) follows the route in the gold-seeking stampeders in 1898, from sea level in the Alaskan panhandle up across the Chilkoot Pass right into Canada.

It’s sometimes physically demanding, but plainly marked, dotted with designated campsites, and jointly monitored by way of Parks Canada and NPS rangers.

Great to know: The Chilkoot season runs from mid-May to first September. Only a few dozens of hikers are allowed over the summit on a daily basis, so it’s far better reserve a licenses and campsites in the beginning. Getting to and from trail also necessitates some planning-the Chilkoot begins a few kilometers outside Skagway, in the Dyea Road, and ends at the edge of Bennett Lake, a few a long way off the Klondike Interstate. The touristy White wine Pass & Yukon Route railroad offers transportation back to Skagway; a cheaper option is always to hike out to the highway along the train tracks and pick up your ride from there.
